We spend last weekend in the Cairngorms National Park, undertaking winter training for being out on the hills in snowy conditions–ice axe, crampons, avalanche training etc. The one phrase that stuck with us both is:
Be Bothered!
– Mark, Trainer from Cairngorm Lodge
You have to be bothered to stay safe in these weather conditions: if you are too hot, you risk being too cold once at higher elevations. It is easier in cold weather to dehydrate. If your foot has a hot spot don’t let that turn into an open blister. Being bothered is keeping you safe. Is keeping you alive.
How often, on a daily basis, do we push our bothersomeness away–our needs? And how much does this eventually impact on our health?
Oh I can quickly squeeze this in.
Just another half hour or so.
I’ll just have lunch at my desk and check emails.
Ach, I am too knackered for the gym.
I will read this tonight.
I can catch up over the weekend.
The amount of times we stopped to adjust straps, change layers, take the poles out. Was not insignificant. So we learned to be bothered.
How can you become bothered?
How often to you need to adjust your proverbial crampon straps?
