Writing Creates More Writing

This year for Academic Writing Month I decided to blog more. That’s it. No specific goals, no three posts a week etc. I didn’t want to immediately inhibit the writing process by setting unrealistic expectations.

It’s mid-semester here, there are teaching observations, teaching, running network, struggling with chronic health issues, all of which is usually more than enough. No need to ramp up the pressure.

I set out simply saying: all right let’s* have a look at all the blogs in draft–that is 52 by the way–and get some of these out there. Accept imperfections and just tell the story.

And this is where it immediately begun: the generation of more writing. That strange phenomenon the more I write the more writing I am creating.

Writing as meaning making process, as form of inquiry, creates new thoughts, alleyways the mind wants to wander, mountain ranges, it wants to explore. Thus, as I write I also keep notes of ideas for more writing.

I am doomed. The draft number of blog posts will never go down! It’s 58 now.

And because today’s post is basically a bit of a moan here is a pretty picture for you.

Heron standing amongst the green reeds all hunched and looking grumpy. No kidding our local heron looks like a grumpy old man. He is still pretty though.

*I am not using the pluralis majestatis it’s more like “me, myself and The Brain”

  1. Creativity is weird that way, isn’t it? It’s one of the attributes that grows in capacity the more we use it. I’ve found that during my serious writing stretches, that my output tends to increase as well. This is compared to the months when I have a lot of free time, where little to no writing gets done. Anyway, thanks for this post!
